The notch should be constantly criticised even if it doesn’t bother you, because it’s bad design; because it’s wrong design. Because there’s nothing essentially advantageous about it. Or beautiful, or functional, or cool, or fun. That part of the MacBook’s display should be treated like a sore spot, where you point and say, There’s room for improvement here.
這樣的擔憂自然不無道理。此外，macOS 並沒有各方 tech YouTuber 所說的那樣對 notch 不敏感，對於時常需要看菜單欄和右上角各種運行狀態指示圖標的人而言，notch 就是在那裡，且無法藉由目視錯覺忽略。相比之下，GNOME 或許是最適合 notched laptop 的，只需移除上方中央的日曆時鐘區域即可。
我們不知道林檎社是否已經對 notch 的設計形成了路徑依賴，但是作為消費者，「我們應當包容 notch」的說法已經顯得冒犯，而「notch 是正常的」實在是不可理喻。
值得留意的自然是自 2017 年 iPhone X 以來，「無邊泳池」式的、對屏幕填充整個表面的追求。這種追求常常和「數字的實用論述」這樣的 narrative 結合在一起：通過減少邊框、擴大屏幕，閱讀體驗更加沉浸，設備體積也能做到更小，更方便攜帶了。然而，此一 narrative 也許還需要更多的檢討。「美國隊長」在想念 iPhone 6s。如 Riccardo Mori 所言：
